Çocukluğun dezintegratif bozukluğu olan çocuklarda doğumdan itibaren en az iki yıl gelişim normal şekilde ilerler. Belirtiler sıklıkla 3-4 yaş arası görülür. Bu tanıyı koyabilmek için belirtilerin 10 yaştan önce gelişmiş olması gereklidir. Epilepsiye sık rastlanır. İlk baştaki belirtiler, aktivitede artış, huzursuzluk ve anksiyetedir.
