Oyun terapisi, terapistlerin 3-11 yaş aralığında sıklıkla başvurduğu bir terapi çeşididir. Tabii bu yaş sınırı biraz da çocuğun oyun becerilerine ve oyuna duyduğu ilgiye göre esneklik kazanabilir.
Bu terapide oyun çocuğun “dili”, oyuncaklar ise “kelimeleridir”. Diğer tüm terapiler gibi çocukların duygusal ve içsel çatışmalarını çözüp, günlük hayata daha iyi adapte olmalarını sağlayan oyun terapisinin merkezinde çocuk vardır. Çocuk bir yetişkin gibi derdini anlatamayabilir, ayrıca kendini bir yetişkin kadar iyi analiz etme şansına sahip de değildir. Bu yüzden özellikle yaşça küçük çocuklar için oyun terapisi son derece etkin bir yöntemdir.
