Kekemeliğin nedeni psikolojik değildir fakat konuşmanın akıcılığındaki bozukluk kişinin yaşam kalitesini olumsuz etkiler ve stres altında kekemelik yoğunlaşır. Bu durumun kalıtımsal olma ihtimali yüksektir. Kekemelik sorunu yaşayan bireyler zeka olarak diğerlerinden farklı değildir.

Yetişkinlerin %1’i kekelemektedir. Bu da Türkiye’de 800.000 kişinin kekelediği anlamına gelmektedir. Bu durum çocukların %5’inde kalıcılık göstermektedir.
